Obituary

Darby Harwell Maki, a four year old Holland Lop, passed away in the arms of his loving mother on Saturday, May 31, 2014. Darby was born on March 20, 2010 (a spring bunny!) in Howell, Michigan. At only a few weeks old, and a tiny ball of fur whose ears hadn't dropped yet, Darby entered our lives. He was a great addition to our pet family, especially his sister-cat Snickers who he had a special relationship with. In addition to cuddling up with the cat, Darby enjoyed eating alfalfa hay, croissant treats, kale and bananas. He of course loved hopping all over the place and jumping on and off the bed. Darby had a sweet spot, as many pets do, when you scratched his butt he would give kisses with his tiny bunny tongue. On November 27, 2011, Darby became ill. The vet was unsure of what exactly was wrong, but they had a good enough idea and sent him home with special food and medicine. After two months of extra love and attention, and hand feeding food and medicine, Darby had a full recovery. In the short months following, Darby journeyed across Michigan with his mom; from Detroit to Grand Blanc, and then Muskegon. While in Muskegon, Darby became a big brother when a stray cat named Daphne appeared on our back porch. The two shared the same special bond that he and Snickers had - a bond that no one would ever expect a bunny and a cat to have. On Friday, May 30, 2014, Darby fell into the condition that he experienced a few years before. Now he's in heaven with the other fuzzies; hopping freely and chasing cats. Darby was a deeply loved little guy, and he will be missed by everyone who ever had the chance to meet him. Darby is survived by his mom, Bekki Maki; grandparents: Dan and Lisa Maki; sister cats (and sometimes girlfriends) Snickers and Daphne Amber; doggie aunts: Penny and Jessica; kitty aunt, Bella. He was preceded in death by doggie sister, Cassidy; doggie brother, Harlie David; kitty sister, Abbey Gail. "Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened."
